SOFTWARE GROWS UP, FROM AN ART TO A DISCIPLINE

But software itself will continue to undergo a transformation, and over the next twenty years software will become a discipline, rather than an art form. Productivity, quality, and management discipline focused on the art of software will transform the software arena into an engineering discipline. Software selection and management will cease to be a “problem” and will instead be perceived as part of the solution, a huge relief to managers struggling with no standardization in the development area. Software work—development, debugging, and growth—will move as a mature discipline under the engineering umbrella, as powerful a tool as the slide rule and the Bowmar brain were in their time. Issues of diagnostics, documentation, and compatibility will have been superseded by integrated smart systems. Further, software will accomplish what well-intended lectures and unifying themes have not—the seamless integration of disparate processes and flows into what we call the extended enterprise.
